Elizabeth Loretta ‘Betty’ (Dascanio) Gomes
Feb. 27, 1924 - April 9, 2017
Elizabeth Loretta “Betty” (Dascanio) Gomes, 93, Altoona, formerly of Bradenton, Fla., passed away Sunday at UPMC Altoona.
She was born in Spindley City, daughter of the late Camillo and Marie (Gallagher) Dascanio. She was the youngest of six children.
Surviving are her husband, Paul I. Gomes of Altoona; a daughter, Elaine (Fred) Vaught of Altoona; a son, Matthew Lesniak of Los Angeles, Calif.; three stepchildren: Patty (Rob) Repko, Cheryl (Alton) Ebersole and Paul Gomes; a beloved son-in-law, George J. Paruch of Altoona; a loving sister, Olive Savino of Altoona; and two family members: Sandy and Joann Dascanio in Michigan.
She was preceded in death by a loving daughter, Belinda (Lesniak) Paruch; three brothers: Howard, Lewis and Lawrence; and a sister, Vera Biel.
Betty was employed by the Leonard and Emily Brett family of Altoona, and she always considered them and their children her family. Later, she was employed as a nursing assistant and Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg and the former Mercy Hospital, Altoona. After relocating to Florida, she managed the original Beall’s Department Store, Bradenton, Fla.
Throughout her life, Betty was an active member of many organizations. She was former president of various VFW associations; a member of the Ladies Auxilliary of the Moose, Bradenton, Fla.; and a member of Mended Hearts Association. The mayor of Sarasota, Fla. presented her with a civic honor for her assistance in making her community a safer place to live. She was also an active member of First United Methodist Church, Bradenton, Fla.

At Betty’s request, there will be no visitation or service. Arrangements are by The Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park.
