Mary Jane Hostler, 74, Slidell, La., age 74, passed away Thursday afternoon at her residence.

She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Stanford E. and Pearl I. Keith James.

Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Herbert G. Hostler; two daughters: Deborah A. Stringer and husband, Darren, of Slidell, La., and Cheryl L. Quinn and husband, Don, of Purvis, Miss.; six grandchildren: David A. Olson, Andrew R. Quinn, Destiny D. Gallo, Jeremy S. Stringer, Matthew P. Stringer and Kaitlyn E. Stringer; three great-grandchildren: Blake D. Gibson, Dexter M. Mikael and Donovan A. Olson; and a brother, Andrew G. James Sr. and wife, Mary, of Altoona.

She was preceded in death by four siblings: John W. James, Lillian E. Reese, Lydia V. James and Lavina G. Pruznak.

Mary had a special way of opening her heart to the people around her. She lit up when she talked about her family and friends. It was important to her that they knew how much she loved them. She found joy in other people’s happiness.

For many years, Mary provided home child care. She called them all “her babies.” She was also active in volunteer activities over the years: She was president of Slidell Elks Lodge Auxiliary; a life-member of Beta Sigma Phi; president of Brock Elementary PTA; a Girl Scout Troop leader/coordinator; and a member of Slidell Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, 2017, at The Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Pastor Janet K. Kephart officiating. Interment will be made at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes for any memorial contributions be sent to Texas Elks State Association Disaster Fund, care of Mr. Orville Weiss TESA Secretary, 2733 Big Oaks Drive, Garland, TX 75044, or to Elks Disaster Relief Effort at www.elks.org/elkscare.
