Obituary for George M. Wagner


George M. Wagner, 92, Altoona, passed away Saturday morning at Hillview Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Altoona.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late Scott E. and Nellie M. (Treese) Wagner. On April 25, 1945, he married Sara Ellen Fries at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Altoona. They were married for 67 years when she preceded him in death on May 8, 2012.

Surviving are a daughter, Carol Nuttall and husband, William, of Pittsburgh; a son, Jeff of Altoona; two grandsons: Kristopher Nuttall and Andrew Nuttall and wife, Natalie, and two great-granddaughters: Amelia and Addison, all of Pittsburgh; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Nellie Charles; and a brother, Gene Wagner.

George was a 1942 graduate of Altoona High School. After graduation, he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps. As a top turret gunner in B-17s and B-24s, he completed 35 missions over Europe as a member of the Eighth Air Force 849th Bombardment Squadron, 490th Bombardment Group Heavy. George earned a Distinguished Flying Cross, an Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters and a European Campaign Medal. After returning home from the war, he worked as a mechanic and then as service manager for Fiore Motors. In his 55-year career at Fiore, he worked as a service manager for Hudson, Brockway Truck, Nash Rambler, Lincoln Mercury, Pontiac, GMC Truck, Isuzu and Mitsubishi. He managed baseball teams in Little League, Connie Mack, George B. Kelley Amateur Baseball Federation and the Greater City Baseball League. He also served as president of the Kelley Federation and City League. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where he served on church council and later as council president. For the last 15 years, he was a member of Simpson-Temple United Parish, Altoona.

George enjoyed spending time with his family, vacationing in Stone Harbor,

N.J., and Vero Beach, Fla., working on his yard and garden and watching sports, especially the Cubs, Pirates, Penguins and Steelers.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2017, at The Good Funeral Home Inc. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017, at the funeral home, Pastor Denise Arpino officiating. Interment will be at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
